Caught, the first of several films to feature a character based on Howard Hughes, was directed by Max Ophüls (here credited as Max Opuls). Ophüls had previously been fired from directing Vendetta, a vanity project Hughes produced as a vehicle for his sometime mistress, Faith Domergue. At the director's instruction, screenwriter Arthur Laurents based Caught on Domergue's and other starlets' experiences of being essentially held captive by Hughes's charisma, his capital and his lies. In Seduction: Sex, Lies and Stardom in Howard Hughes's Hollywood, Karina Longworth pulls from hundreds of unpublished documents (including Domergue's never-released memoirs) to detail how over a dozen actresses from Hollywood's golden age got caught in Hughes's web, and how their personal and professional relationships with him impacted their careers, their lives and their legacies.
