Stream of the Week: PARIAH
Dee Rees’ debut feature film (worked up from a short film) Pariah is about a young black woman coming to terms with her lesbianism. It is seething, terse, and operatic. It premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was awarded the Excellence in Cinematography Award.
Pariah is a tender, sporadically goofy, yet candid examination of emergent identity, a film whose lack of attitude sets it apart from much of the hard-bitten, thug-life storytelling that's dominated African-American cinema for decades. - via NPR
