Stream of the Week: HIMIKO

by Natalie Fält (founder of WOMEN AND FILM)

Every week I will curate a film that is available to stream from my arsenal of inspiration.    If you're anything like me, you end up spending so much time mining through the depths of Netflix and Amazon that you get overwhelmed and adhere to your default programming or guilty pleasure.  I'm here to bring you a film a week that has inspired me which is what made me want to start women and film, to share beautiful films with others.  These will be hidden gems, women directed films, and genre films that will get you yearning for movie night.

Stream of the Week:

HIMIKO (1974)

Directed by: Masahiro Shinoda

Masahiro Shinoda (Double Suicide) at his most theatrical and sophisticated. Set between highly stylized settings reminding of Greek drama and the archaic Butoh dance performances of Tatsuji Hijikata’s Ankoku Butoh dance troupe, Shinodas shakespearian take on the myth of Himiko, the shaman priestess of the Sun Goddess is a breathtakingly beautiful and original film about power, treason and love.
